We go about our daily lives texting, driving, drinking coffee, writing emails, mindlessly moving through our duties as productive citizens. But, while participating in our routines, we are blatantly neglecting ourselves. We are absent-mindedly ignoring the very things that could grant us that heart-felt joy. Many of us have turned into zombies – attached to the television, computer screen, or tablet. Waiting to be amused and entertained. When will we realize these manmade contraptions, these modern day technologies aren’t going to ignite our passions? When will we recognize the beauty that waits to inspire us just outside our doors?
When I need to ground myself, when I need inspiration, when I need to recharge my own batteries so to speak, I go outside. I don’t have to do anything extraordinary outside. I’ll go for a walk around my suburban neighborhood. Or I’ll sit in my backyard, soaking up the sun and staring up into the sky or gazing into the tree boughs above me. There’s something so special about just being in nature. Just feeling the breeze in your hair, the grass under your feet, hearing the birds chirp and watching the squirrels play. No matter where you live, you can reconnect with yourself—the creative and blissful part of you that you’ve been neglecting—simply by going outside and listening to nature speak.
No matter your religion, spiritual beliefs or path, Mother Nature is there for you to lean on. She is waiting for you to talk to her. Lay your burdens on her. She is ready to answer your prayers. I say that your religion doesn’t matter because God/the Divine/the Universe (whatever you want to call it) will often speak to us through nature. I’ve heard so many people say, “if God listened, he would’ve answered my prayers.” I don’t believe that it’s because God doesn’t answer, I believe it’s because we aren’t listening. Or we aren’t open to receiving the messages that are being given to us. Quite often these answers come to us in the form of Mother Nature.
Just this morning I asked the Universe to send me a spiritual lesson, and the Universe did just that. As I sat sipping my coffee and browsing the internet I heard a scraping, knocking sound, at my front door. I opened it to find a sweet little box turtle staring up at me through black, beady eyes. Now you might be wondering how does a turtle on your front step reflect any kind of spiritual lesson? The turtle represents motherhood and balance. She reminded me to take a step back and reflect on my day – to enjoy being a mother but also remember to find time for myself. Again, nature speaks to us and brings us messages from the Universe if we are able to listen. If we are able to set down our phones and our tablets and open our weary, glazed-over eyes to look at the signs all around us. Do you notice a particular type of bird showing up in front of your house or on your way to work more so than normal? That bird could be your sign or message from the Universe, from God. Is it a blue jay? A mockingbird? A crow? Every one of these birds has a special message to bring the receiver. If you aren’t aware of the message, visit the library or do a simple search on the internet. That’s right. Pull up the old google machine and type in “mockingbird symbolism” or “crow meaning” or “robin spirit animal”. Your search will pull up various meanings, but you will know when you’ve found your answer. It’s a feeling deep inside, it’s like tapping into your soul’s memory. It’s connecting with Mother Nature and hearing her words reflected in the outside world.
Don’t forget that just like animals can bring messages from the Universe, plants, trees, even stones can talk to you. And they will talk to you. Have you been wondering why a certain weed is growing on your fence that’s never been there before? Has a certain tree been catching your eye? Mother Nature will use all of her work to contact you.
You might be thinking, I go outside and never notice any of these things. I don’t get signs or messages from animals or plants. My answer to that is – you need to get out more! Put down the remote control, close the laptop, stop worrying about the dishes, laundry, etcetera…and step out into the natural world. Go for a walk, wash your car, go to the park, do some gardening or yard work. Anything to be nearer to nature and await its lessons for you. Ask the Universe (again, insert your name for God here) for a sign. Make an effort to reconnect with nature, and you will reconnect with God and yourself. You’ll be inspired and energized by the messages you receive. And the more you do this, the more it will become second (or first) nature to you. Pun intended. So set down your phones and let nature do the talking…for once.
